1-1 draw with Gettysburg keeps Washington’s playoff hopes alive

CHESTERTOWN — The Shore ladies are going to have to win out and get some help if they’re to qualify for the Centennial Conference soccer tournament.

Washington kept its playoff hopes alive after coming from behind to tie league rival Gettysburg, 1-1, here on Oct. 19.

After a scoreless first half in which Gettysburg carried play with an 8-3 advantage in shots, Zoe Want connected on the first opportunity after intermission to give the visiting side a 1-0 lead. Want headed in a cross from Petra Brown with just 3 minutes, 11 seconds elapsed in the second half.

That lead held until the 71st minute when WC’s Bridget Whiteside netted her first goal of the season. She headed in a corner kick taken by Dahlia Kuzemka.

Washington outshot Gettysburg in the second half, 12-5, to finish with a slim 15-13 advantage.

Olivia Allen had six saves, and some good fortune.

In the 27th minute, Want’s penalty kick — awarded after a foul by Allen in the box — sailed over the crossbar.

Washington (6-2-7 overall) is 2-2-3 in the Centennial, trailing two-time defending champion Johns Hopkins (10-2-3, 7-1 CC), McDaniel (9-2-3, 5-0-2 CC) and four schools each with four conference wins.

Only six teams qualify for the conference tournament that begins Nov. 5.

Washington has three matches remaining, including Saturday at 1 p.m. against Muhlenberg (2-12-1, 1-5-1 CC). It’s the final home match.

The locals close out the regular season at Swarthmore (7-2-5, 4-1-2 CC) and Franklin & Marshall (6-3-6, 4-1-3 CC).
