CRISFIELD — An hours-long school bus ride from the southernmost county in the state was not the ideal way to start spring break, but it wasn’t all bad for KCHS’ softball players.
They were coming home as winners — big winners — from Crisfield.
Pushing 11 runs across the plate in a bat-around first inning, Kent County High School (2-6) soundly defeated its host, 23-8, April 16 in a game that was halted after five innings due to the lopsided score.
Junior Michelle Menequin picked up the win in the circle, and helped her cause with four RBI.
Kate Cannon, hitting in the cleanup spot, homered twice and drove in five runs.
Leadoff batter Talicia Wright reached safely in all five plate appearances and scored every time.
The top of the Trojans’ batting order — Wright, Menequin, Paige Miller and Cannon — collectively scored 14 runs.
Making that same long trip was Kent County’s baseball team, which was on the short end of a 5-3 final.
Senior Tanner Beck went the distance on the hill for the Trojans and deserved a better fate.
“Defense let him down,” coach Jason Conner told The Evening Enterprise in a telephone interview.
“We beat ourselves,” Conner added. “One inning, a couple of mistakes.”
With production from the top of the batting order — Noah Iacona, Hunter Hawn, Scottie Ford and Beck — the Trojans built a 3-0 lead.
Their lead should have been more substantial, but they left runners on base.
Meantime, opportunistic Crisfield, after closing to 3-2, scored three runs in an error-filled fifth inning to complete the comeback.
KCHS is 2-6, with as many games remaining as have been played, beginning tomorrow at Colonel Richardson.
It’s a chance for a “fresh start,” coach Conner said.
“Hopefully, with spring break off their minds, it will be back to baseball,” he said.
WHAT’S NEXT: Kent County’s baseball and softball teams have three games this week: Wednesday, April 23 at Colonel Richardson; Thursday at home against St. Michaels; and Friday at home against North Dorchester. All games start at 4 p.m.
