CHESTERTOWN — Police have charged a 43-year-old Queenstown woman with striking two pedestrians who were legally in a crosswalk on High Street in downtown Chestertown on Wednesday evening, April 22.
The driver was identified as Amanda Marie Wilson.
She was served traffic citations for failure to stop for pedestrian[s] in a crosswalk and driving on suspended license and privilege.
Wilson was released on her own recognizance, the Chestertown Police Department reported.
According to the Maryland Judiciary Case Search, Wilson has a trial scheduled for June 8 in the District Court for Kent County.
The pedestrians, identified as an 80-year-old man and his 66-year-old wife from the Chestertown area, were transported to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown, where they were treated for their injuries and released.
At 6:53 p.m., the Chestertown Police Department and Emergency Medical Services personnel from the Kent-Queen Anne’s Rescue Squad and Kent County EMS were dispatched to the 300-block of High Street at the intersection with Cross Street for a report of two pedestrians who had been struck by a motor vehicle.
Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company and Kent County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
According to a CPD news release, the investigation led by Officer Pedro Rodriguez determined that the pedestrians were legally in the crosswalk attempting to walk from the northbound side of High Street to the southbound side of High Street when the driver of a 2011 Buick Enclave attempted to make a left-hand turn from South Cross Street into the northbound lane of the 300-block of High Street.
As the driver, subsequently identified as Wilson, attempted to make the left-hand turn, her vehicle struck the two pedestrians.
CPD reported that the woman suffered a minor lower extremity injury while her husband suffered more extensive injuries on his lower and upper body.
Wilson remained at the scene, according to police.
