2023 Spartans Season Begins

WORTON PARK — Kent County Spartans football and cheer program opened its 2023 season Saturday, Aug. 26 with a full slate of four games against the visiting Clovers of Salisbury, culminating with a 4 p.m. kickoff in the 13U game. In the finale, the Clovers rallied from a 13-6 halftime deficit to win by three touchdowns. The Spartans scored on their first snap of the second quarter, Romelo “Melo” Wilson zigging and zagging his way 40 yards into the end zone. Quarterback Paul Tue IV ran in the extra point for a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, the Clovers were pinned down on their own 30-yard line. They were pushed back as far as the 23 because of penalties, and ultimately turned the ball over on downs. The Spartans took over just inside the 50-yard line in Clovers’ territory. On the first play from scrimmage, RayKel Lee broke a tackle and rumbled 48 yards for a TD that hiked the lead to 13-0. The conversion pass failed. The Clovers got on the board immediately afterward, returning the following kickoff for their first score of the afternoon. It appeared that they had scored again with 40 seconds remaining before intermission, on a catch-and-run play of 50-plus yards, but the touchdown was called back for a blindside block. The Clovers asserted themselves in the second half with four touchdowns, closing the game on a run of 25 unanswered points for the 31-13 final. Kent County went 2-2 on the day, winning the 7U (18-7) and 9U (13-12) games, but dropping the 11U (18-0) and 13U games.
