3 displaced by house fire in Church Hill

CHURCH HILL — Three occupants of a home in the 100-block of Walnut Street were displaced by a middle-of-the-night fire on Sunday, May 11.

They are being assisted by family, friends and neighbors, the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal reported.

According to the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation, the two-story, single-family residence is owned by Darley Property Inspections LLC of Denton.

One of the occupants discovered the fire at 12:53 a.m.

The fire marshal’s office reported that a smoke alarm was present and activated.

A total of 53 firefighters answered the alarm and brought the fire under control in an hour and 30 minutes, according to the state fire marshal’s office.

Church Hill Volunteer Fire Company was the primary responding agency.

According to the Church Hill Volunteer Fire Company Facebook page, crews from Sudlersville, Crumpton, Queenstown, Grasonville, Chestertown, Goldsboro and Millington as well as Queen Anne’s County Department of Emergency Services also operated on the scene.

Investigators with the OSFM determined that the fire originated in the rear of the house. The cause is under investigation.

No injuries were reported.

Loss is estimated to be $450,000 to the structure and $360,000 in contents, according to the fire marshal’s office.

According to a post on the Church Hill Volunteer Fire Company’s Facebook page, the family has asked for donations in the form of gift cards to get them started on their fire recovery journey.

“For them, this will be a long recovery process, so gift cards for food, gas, and general needs will be accepted at this time,” the post states.

The fire company has set up a lock box in its front lobby [double glass doors] in the front of the firehouse for the public to drop off gift cards. This way the donations are secure and under surveillance.

“We are not accepting clothing or other household items at this time. We will continue to work with the family and the neighbors helping them to assist with their needs as they continue through this long process of rebuilding their home and understanding their new normal,” the Facebook post states.
