ROCK HALL — Investigators with the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal determined that last week’s fire near here was accidental, caused by discarded ashes from a fireplace.
The dispatch was at 9:52 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16 for a structure fire in the 6900-block of Hagy Road, Rock Hall. The structure was described as an 8×10-foot detached shed with extension to a single-family dwelling.
No injuries were reported.
The fire originated within the interior of the shed located adjacent to the home.
“The fire consumed the detached shed and extended to the dwelling due to the close proximity and high winds,” according to a news release from the fire marshal’s office.
Investigators reported that the home sustained significant damage; loss to the structures and contents is estimated to be $100,000, according to the fire marshal’s office.
The OSFM and Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation online records identified the owners as Robert and Susan Priest.
They were displaced and are receiving assistance from friends, according to the fire marshal’s office.
The homeowners discovered the fire.
There was a smoke alarm in the home and it activated, according to the news release.
Thirty firefighters responded and brought the fire under control in one hour. Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Company was the primary responding fire department.
