LANDOVER — No, you haven’t missed news of how Kent County High School juniors Ke’yare Hawkins and Ramon “RJ” Peterson fared at the state indoor track and field championships.
The Class 1A meet, which is for the smallest school systems in the state, initially was scheduled for Feb. 18 at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover. Then it was pushed back to Feb. 19, and then Feb. 21 and now Wednesday, Feb. 26 — all because inclement weather affecting parts of the state of Maryland forced school system cancellations.
At next week’s state championships, KCHS will be represented by two of its historically great athletes: Hawkins, who holds the school record of 35 feet, 3.25 inches in the shot put and Peterson, who holds the school record of 36.55 seconds in the 300 meters.
They qualified based on their outstanding performances Feb. 7 in the East Region championships at the sports complex in Landover.
Hawkins (34-6) was the runner-up to Central High School junior Cailey Newman (34-10.5), and automatically qualified as a medal winner. Peterson, who lowered his own school record, advanced on his time.
