Winters nets hat trick in Washington debut

CHESTERTOWN — Former Shoreman all-stars now college head coaches John Nostrant and Curtis Gilbert faced off here Feb. 15, with Nostrant-led Washington defeating Gilbert’s Barry squad, 12-6.

The game was played under gray skies, in the rain and occasional snow showers, and the air temperature in the low 30s.

This was the season opener for the locals, who were paced by freshman attackman Nate Winters’ hat trick.

Winters scored on the Shoremen’s first shot, off a pass from Grant Matthews with 3 minutes, 3 seconds elapsed, for a lead that was never challenged.

Matthews also had the helper on Logan Trombley’s tally that made it 2-0 with 8:34 remaining in the first frame.

The two-goal spread held up at the end of the opening quarter, 3-1, and at halftime, 5-3.

Washington took an 8-5 lead into the fourth quarter and salted away the win by scoring four goals in a row before Barry (0-2) scored a meaningless goal with only 59 seconds to play.

WC led in shots, 47-28; ground balls, 41-31; and face-offs, 13-7.

Cam Carrigan and Reeve Hargrave each contributed two second-half goals for the winners, and Ronan Miller won 12 of 16 draws.

Sophomore Colin Gray (14 saves) went the distance in between the pipes.

Washington is home again Saturday at 3 p.m. against Elizabethtown.
