Chestertown hospital now has state-of-the-art MRI machine

CHESTERTOWN — University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown has acquired a state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging machine at its diagnostics center at 100 Brown St., representing substantial advancements in patient imaging technology.

The new MRI, which replaces the existing one, features an 80-centimeter bore that will increase access and comfort for larger patients and for those who suffer from anxiety or claustrophobia, according to Kelly Bottomley, regional manager of radiology for UM Shore Regional Health.

“In addition, it produces high-quality images made possible by using the latest innovations in digital imagery, and with flex coil technology, we will be able to offer a wider array of exams,” Bottomley said in a news release.

A full retrofit of the space housing the MRI was completed over the summer to ensure all safety standards were met or exceeded, said Katelyn Roskosky, UM Shore Regional Health’s construction and facilities manager.

“We are thankful to our project and construction teams, who worked tirelessly to bring MRI services back online in Chestertown so quickly,” Roskosky said in the news release.

The Chester River Health Foundation has committed $1.2 million toward the purchase and renovations, including an initial gift of $600,000.

Zack Royston, executive director/vice president of rural health at the Chestertown hospital, said the foundation’s steadfast support “is bringing our community the power of state-of-the-art MRI technology, improving the ability to diagnose and care for more patients close to home.”

MRIs are now available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
