MASSEY — Massey Aerodrome got a big surprise a couple of weeks ago when Hot Rod Drag Week 2025 descended upon the airport unannounced. More than 250 “street rods” paraded through from noon to sundown to complete the day’s checkpoint requirement.
“We were not informed ahead of time and it was just fortunate that our Bob Dierker was planning on mowing the runways and was able to greet them and open up the hangars and museum so they could tour them,” Massey Aerodrome volunteer Bill Dougherty said of the Sept. 18 visit.
More than 400 of the fastest street rods in the country annually enter this grueling test of endurance and speed.
This year, Drag Week vehicles traveled 1000-plus miles between four mid-Atlantic drag strips from Monday through Friday, Sept. 15-19 — with trailers only, no support vehicles.
According to Dougherty, many of the 250 vehicles that regularly attend the Galena Lions Club judged car show at Massey Aerodrome are similar type street rods, along with antique, classic and sports cars, trucks and motorcycles.
The show moved to Massey in 2017.
This year’s show is Sunday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Massey Aerodrome, located at 33541 Maryland Line Road, is family friendly and handicap accessible (on grass).
This is not a “fly-in” per se, but flying guests and the general public are invited to attend.
Admission is free.
Refreshments will be sold to benefit the Lions Club charities.
