Museum consortium to showcase new installations, local collections

CHESTERTOWN — The Museums of Kent County will host an open house — free and open to the public — at the Kent County Visitors Center on Friday, Nov. 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. It’s First Friday, so there will be cider and light refreshments.

This will be an opportunity to meet representatives from the participating museums, and learn about their programs and exhibits.

The visitors center is located at 122 North Cross St., Chestertown, adjacent to town hall.

On display will be exhibits recently installed by the Museums of Kent County.

One wall showcases the hand-painted wood blocks of local artist Mary O’Bara, who created a series of miniature paintings representing each of Kent County’s museums — all set against a reproduction of Simon Martenet’s 1860 map of the county.

A second installation, titled “Did You Know?” features historical facts and stories from across Kent County. Designed to engage both residents and visitors, the wall highlights the Museums of Kent County’s mission to share and preserve local history in creative and accessible ways.

Also on view for the open house will be felt figures crafted by the late Elizabeth “Betty” Stirling, what has been described as “a cherished part” of the Kent Museum’s collections.

“These whimsical, hand-stitched characters graced High Street storefront windows in the 1950s and 1960s, delighting generations of families who looked forward to each new display,” a news release states.

The Museums of Kent County is a collaborative group of local institutions working together to promote and preserve the county’s rich cultural heritage.

The organization includes the Bordley History Center, the Kent Museum, the Betterton Heritage Museum, the Massey Air Museum, Sumner Hall, the Waterman’s Museum, the Lodge on Eastern Neck Island and the Worton Point African American Schoolhouse.
