Kent County cagers tip off Friday against Washington

WORTON — Kent County High School pulls back the curtain on its 2025-26 basketball season tomorrow (Friday, Dec. 5) against Washington.

The girls travel to Princess Anne, while the boys will stay home and play a junior varsity-varsity twin bill in Trojan Arena.

KCHS graduate Tyray Johnson returns for a fifth year as head coach of the girls program. He led a mostly underclassman squad to the region final a year ago when the Trojans finished 8-13, the most wins since the 12-10 campaign of 2019-20.

There’s been a change in leadership of the boys programs, with Melvin “MJ” Freeman, also a KCHS graduate, as the junior varsity coach and Vontrell Coles as the varsity coach.

Tip-off here tomorrow is at 4 p.m for the jayvee boys game and 5:30 p.m. for the varsity boys game.

Kent County High School in partnership with the 4-H Holiday Toy Drive, sponsored by Kent County 4-H’ers, will host a Teddy Bear Toss during the boys games. Free admission will be offered to spectators who bring a teddy bear or stuffed animal to throw out on the court during the halftime show of the varsity game. All stuffed animals will be donated to the 4-H Holiday Toy Drive.
