Shore cagers are 6-6 at semester break; resume play Jan. 7

CHESTERTOWN — Washington’s women’s basketball team closed out 2025 with its fourth win in five games, 72-62, over state rival St. Mary’s here on Dec. 13.

Led by the double-digit scoring of Abby Meredith, Taylor Shane, Emma Robinson and Kaitlyn Boggs, the Shore ladies improved to 6-6.

Meredith knocked down a 3-pointer on the first shot of the afternoon and Washington opened the game on a 6-0 run.

The locals twice led by as many as 12 points in the opening quarter and pushed their advantage to 16 points twice in the second quarter — the second time at 34-18 on a pair of Meredith free throws with 4 minutes, 11 seconds remaining in the half.

After pulling to within single digits at the break, 39-30, St. Mary’s (7-4) opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run in the span of about four minutes to take its only lead of the game, 42-41, on a Sidney Shaw jumper.

Robinson’s layup on the ensuing possession restored Washington’s lead for good, 43-42, with 5:49 remaining in the third quarter.

The spread was 50-46 with one frame remaining.

St. Mary’s Saffiyah Gibson scored on the first shot of the fourth quarter to make it a one possession game, 50-48, but the Seahawks would get no closer.

Shane’s 3-pointer at the 9-minute mark touched off a 12-4 run that restored Washington’s double-digit lead, 62-52, with 7:25 to go.

Washington led by as many as 11 points down the stretch, 67-56, on an Ellie Carter-Soriano three with 5:08 remaining.

Meredith put up a game-high 18 points to lead four Shore ladies in double figures.

Shane contributed 17 points, followed by Robinson (14 points and game-high 15 rebounds) and Boggs (11 points and 14 rebounds) with double-doubles.

Robinson, a senior guard/forward from Washington, D.C., played all 40 minutes. Her line included three steals and a game-high five assists.

St. Mary’s Keira Mason also had a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Washington resumes play Jan. 7 at four-time defending Centennial Conference champion Gettysburg.

In a preseason poll of the conference’s head coaches, Johns Hopkins was picked to finish at the top of the standings.

The Blue Jays earned seven first-place votes and 97 points.

Gettysburg’s women picked up the other four first-place votes and totaled 94 points as the second choice.

McDaniel (76 points) followed in third, with Dickinson (68 points) and Ursinus (68 points) tied for fourth.

Franklin & Marshall rounded out the projected playoff teams in sixth place with 52 points.

Washington (49 points), Muhlenberg (34 points), Swarthmore (28 points), Haverford (28 points) and Bryn Mawr (11 points) completed the poll. 

Washington is 1-1 in conference play, with a 68-42 loss to No. 5-ranked Hopkins (8-0, 2-0 CC) on Dec. 3 and a 60-39 victory over Swarthmore (3-5, 0-2 CC) three days later. Both games were played in Chestertown.
