CHESTERTOWN — A house and most of its contents were destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 20 in Chestertown.
No injuries were reported.
The fire in the 100-block of Poplar Street was discovered at about 2:30 p.m. by one of the house’s occupants. She was able to safely exit the house along with her mother, according to the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal.
A smoke alarm was present but failed to activate, the OSFM reported.
The fire originated on the back deck and then spread to the interior of the house.
The cause is under investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call the fire marshal’s Upper Eastern Regional Office at 410-819-3500.

An estimated 30 to 40 firefighters responded.
Thy brought the fire under control in an hour, according to the OSFM.
Chestertown VFC posted on its Facebook page that four people were living in the house. They are being assisted by family and friends.
