WORTON — Kent County High School decked Elkton, 59-12, Friday night in its regular-season finale.
The Trojans moved to 5-8 — an improvement from last year’s 3-11 campaign.
Next up is the Class 1A East Region duals where as the No. 7 seed KCHS will travel to No. 2 seed St. Michaels on Tuesday. The Saints’ 10-4 record includes a 48-33 victory at Kent last month.
Due to weather-related school closings, the final week of the regular season was chock-full of makeup matches.
Kent County went 2-1 in the span of four days, defeating Bo Manor on Tuesday, 39-24; losing to North Caroline on Wednesday, 67-8; and wrapping up the regular season here on Friday, Feb. 6 against Elkton.
Only three bouts were contested in Friday’s match, and KCHS won all three — Beckett Vivier and Landon Merritt by pin at 126 and 132 pounds, respectively, and Tye Bellarin by technical fall at 144.
Elkton’s 12 points were the result of two wins by forfeit.
There are 11 schools in the 1A East. Three schools — Elkton (0-14), Mardela (1-13) and Bo Manor (2-11) — have withdrawn from the regional duals tournament.
The remaining eight schools are listed here by their seeding: Rising Sun, 11-1; St. Michaels, 10-4; Snow Hill, 10-4; Cambridge-South Dorchester, 7-6; Colonel Richardson, 6-7; Perryville, 5-8, Kent County, 5-8; and North Dorchester, 5-9.
The tie for sixth between Perryville and KCHS was broken by a coin toss today [Monday, Feb. 9], which Perryville won.
The top four seeds will host quarterfinal- and semifinal-round matches.
The winner of the Kent-St. Michaels match will face the winner of Perryville at Snow Hill.
The region semifinals and finals are Thursday, Feb. 12.
The state semifinals and finals are Saturday, Feb. 14 at North Point High School in Waldorf.
