Kent’s animal shelter to participate in ‘mega adoption event’

CHESTERTOWN — The Animal Care Shelter for Kent County is one of nine regional shelters that will participate in Brandywine Valley SPCA’s December Mega Adoption Event®.

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 9-10, dogs, cats, puppies and kittens will be available to adopt for just $35 at the ACSKC and all participating locations.

The ACSKC is located at 10168 Worton Road (state Route 297), near

Since founding the Mega Adoption Event eight years ago, the BVSPCA and its partners have found homes for more than 13,000 pets, according to a news release.

“ACSKC is thrilled to participate in an initiative that has directly impacted thousands of deserving animals,” the news release states.

The $35 adoption fee includes the animal’s spay/neuter surgery, all age-appropriate vaccines and a microchip.

Adopters must have an approved application prior to meeting the animals, and are strongly encouraged to complete an online application prior to the event. They also should bring a leash for a dog adoption or a carrier for a cat adoption.

The ACSKC recommends bringing any dogs in the home to meet a potential new canine family member. Outdoor meet-and-greet areas will be available, and meetings will be facilitated by ACSKC staff.

As Kent County’s only animal shelter, the ACSKC cares for hundreds of animals each year.

The ACSKC is an open admission shelter, meaning it takes  in every domesticated animal in need from Kent County — cats and dogs, and even guinea pigs and pot-bellied pigs.

“We do not euthanize animals based on breed, for space, or length of stay. Our mission is to care for all of our animals until they’re home,” the website states.

The nonprofit ACSKC also focuses on progressive programs that strengthen the community through its food pantry, lost and found services, rehoming support services and more.
