Arrest warrant obtained for Millington man charged with murder of stepfather

CENTREVILLE — The Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office has obtained an arrest warrant charging a Millington man with first-degree murder and related crimes in the death of his stepfather.

The suspect has been identified as Brian Joseph Sykes, 48.

He was apprehended Sunday night, Oct. 13 during a traffic stop in Philadelphia’s Juniata Park section, according to a news release from the QACSO and media reports in the area.

The victim in the case is David Teat, 67, of Millington.

At about 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, deputies from the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence on Pfalzgroff Road for a report of a medical emergency. Upon arrival, they found that Teat had been involved in a serious altercation, which ultimately led to his death, according to the news release.

The investigation, which included interviews with witnesses and family members, led to the development of Sykes as a suspect.

Sykes had fled the scene, and Teat’s pickup truck was missing.

A stolen vehicle alert and a person of interest alert were issued.

Also, law enforcement in surrounding states were notified and a regional search was initiated.

At about 11:15 p.m. Sunday, Sykes was located during a traffic stop when a felony alert came back on the vehicle’s tags.

Sykes sped off, leading police on a chase and striking multiple parked vehicles before being apprehended.

A police vehicle also sustained damages, according to media reports in Philadelphia.

Sykes and a passenger, who was not identified, were transported to area hospitals for treatment of injuries that were said to be minor.

Sykes initially was held in Philadelphia on charges related to the traffic stop and crash, but will be extradited to Maryland where the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office obtained an arrest warrant charging him with first- and second-degree murder; first- and second-degree assault; armed robbery; robbery; and theft, $1,500 to less than $25,000.

The investigation remains active.
