ROCK HALL — Seeking a quick cooldown after running the nearly 5-mile Flat Five on a sweltering summer morning Thursday, Courtney Kusy of Norristown, Pennsylvania applies a fist full of ice to the back of her neck.
One Flat Five regular likened the July 4 conditions — air temperature in the 90s, high humidity and a strong sun — to “feeling like you’re running under a blanket.”
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the Mid-Shore region throughout the extended holiday weekend with a projected heat index of at least 105 degrees on Friday and Saturday.
Health officials are advising that residents should stay hydrated, remain indoors with a working air conditioner or fan, and be sure to check on vulnerable neighbors.
Also, provide plenty of fresh water for your pets, and leave the water in a shady area.
