Checkmate

CHESTERTOWN — A pair of Washington College defenders keep Dickinson’s Ben Monroe at bay in the first half of the Centennial Conference lacrosse opener for both schools Saturday here on the turf of Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium.

Washington upset No. 11-ranked Dickinson, 10-9, on junior attackman Peyton Gestole’s goal with 1 minute, 36 seconds remaining in the third extra 4-minute period. Gestole, of Sudlersville, is a graduate of Queen Anne’s County High School.

This was the Shoremen’s first win over the Red Devils since 2014.

In a preseason poll of the Centennial Conference head coaches, Dickinson was picked to win its fifth straight CC championship, while Washington was picked to finish sixth in the nine-school league.

With Saturday’s win, Washington improved to 7-2 — the best start for John Nostrant ’86 in his five years as head coach at his alma mater.
