Colonel Richardson defeats Kent on way to region title in volleyball

AMERICAN CORNER — Colonel Richardson defeated Kent County in the opening round of the Class 1A East Region II volleyball tournament, 3-1.

The Colonels (8-11) won three sets in a row after dropping the first set.

The score in the decisive fourth set was 26-24.

“We won the first set and then just started committing unforced errors. Service errors and hitting errors,” KCHS coach Michelle Phillips said of the Oct. 29 playoff match at Colonel Richardson.

“We have played better,” Phillips told The Evening Enterprise, “but even not playing at the top of our game we had a chance to win.”

Kent County finishes 2-13.

Eight losses were to larger Class 2A opponents, including Bayside Conference champion Queen Anne’s and 2024 and 2025 East Region II champion Kent Island.

Also, Kent County was 0-3 this fall against Colonel Richardson, losing each time by a 3-1 score.

No. 4 seed Colonel Richardson went on to win the 1A East Region II title after upsetting No. 1 seed North Dorchester in the second round, 3-0, and No. 2 seed Mardela in the championship match, 3-0.

In the state quarterfinals on Nov. 7, West Region II champion South Carroll (16-1) eliminated Colonel Richardson, 3-0.
