Community embraces bocce league founder Frank Hurst

CHESTERTOWN — Saturday was Frank Hurst Day in Chestertown, and there’s a mayoral proclamation to prove it.

Marking the 10th anniversary of Ye Olde Town Bocce League was the opportune time to also honor the league’s founder, biggest supporter and commissioner for life, Frank Hurst.

Also on Saturday, Los Vatos Locos rallied to defeat Rolling Stoned, 17-16, in the championship match of the fall season.

We’ll report on that match in a later post.

Prior to the first bocce ball being thrown, Mayor David Foster applauded Hurst’s vision, power of persuasion and inspiration in “bringing fun and social competition to Chestertown.”

In addition to bringing people together and fostering friendships, the league has become a source of pride in the community, the mayor said.

He noted that Rock Hall and Chester River Yacht & Country Club followed Chestertown in forming bocce leagues.

Reading from the proclamation, Foster related how Ye Olde Town Bocce League started in the fall of 2013 with a modest goal of attracting 25 players.

Instead, the turnout was 66 — enough for 10 teams.

To say that the league has grown would be an understatement. It is flourishing   — with 50 teams and nearly 450 participants, playing on Tuesday and Thursday nights in Wilmer Park in both spring and fall seasons.

Hurst has been essential to the league’s success.

Reading from the proclamation, Foster said that with the unanimous support of the town council, he was proclaiming Saturday, Oct. 21 as Frank Hurst Day in Chestertown.

And with that, all those in attendance stood to applaud Hurst.

“It’s lovely to be here,” the publicity-shy Hurst said.

He called up his wife Ellen to share the moment, and generally thanked everyone associated with the league.

Hurst always has said the league is a “team effort.”
