CHESTERTOWN — The Kent County Public Schools Education Foundation Fund is hosting a career and retirement celebration for outgoing Superintendent Karen Couch in May.

Community members, colleagues, family and friends are invited to the event, which will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 9 at Chester River Yacht & Country Club. There will be guest speakers and entertainment provided by musicians from Kent County High School.

Couch is retiring at the end of June, concluding a decades-long career in education that started as a classroom teacher in 1980 in New Mexico.

She began her tenure as Kent County’s schools chief in July 2013.

Couch, Ed.D., has been honored as Superintendent of the Year for both New Mexico and Maryland.

“Throughout her career, first in New Mexico and since 2013 here in Kent County, Dr. Couch has made the students her top priority. This celebration will highlight the passion for education that has been a hallmark of Dr. Couch’s illustrious career,” Joe Goetz, president of the Kent County Board of Education, said in a news release.

Proceeds from the event will go to the KCPS Education Foundation Fund, which helps cover costs for school field trips and provides mini-grants to teachers.

Chester River Yacht & Country Club is located at 7738 Quaker Neck Road, Chestertown.

If you are unable to attend, consider making a donation in Couch’s name to the school system’s Education Foundation Fund.
