TOLCHESTER — It’s the hottest week of the year, so that must mean it’s Kent County Fair week.
The grounds opened to the public Wednesday, July 17.
For the next three days, July 18 through July 20, the fairgrounds at the Kent Agriculture Center on Tolchester Beach Road will be the locale of nonstop activities. The grounds will open each day at 8 a.m. Admission is $3 per person for anyone 5 and older.
The midway will be open each night from 5 to 10 o’clock.
New this year is a Power Wheels demolition derby for youth ages 3-5 and 6-8 at 5 p.m on Saturday and a Kiss the Cow fundraiser at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Other special events include the greased pig and pickle-eating contests on Friday and the livestock and cake auctions on Saturday.
Each night there will be musical entertainment and dinner — crab cakes on Thursday, pork barbecue on Friday and chicken barbecue on Saturday.

There are about 120 local youth involved in 4-H.
According to Beth Hill, the principal agent associate for 4-H youth development in Kent County, 4-H’ers say, “The best time of the year is fair time.”
County 4-H’ers and their parents spent the last week sprucing up the fairgrounds, inside and out, with the big push on Wednesday, July 10 when it was all hands on deck.
