Depp breaks 28-year-old KCHS record in 1600 meters

CAMBRIDGE — While injury this winter likely prevented Janey Depp from qualifying for the state indoor track championships as a follow-up to her breakout cross country season in the fall, the Kent County High School junior appears to be well-healed.

Pun intended.

On Saturday at the ninth annual Cambridge Classic outdoor track and field invitational, Depp established a school record of 5 minutes, 50.92 seconds in the 1600 meters.

The previous record of 5:54.8 was set by Erin Hoopes in May of 1998.

The only person faster than Depp was Snow Hill senior Allie Suarezapecheche, who stopped the timer in 5:48.64.

Depp also was the runner-up to Suarezapecheche in the 800 and 3200, also in personal-best times.

They are well acquainted with one another; Suarezapecheche and Depp placed one-two in the 1A East Region cross country championships.

Athletes from 15 schools competed in the Cambridge Classic, which was pushed back one day to March 28 because of inclement weather.

KCHS has a robust roster of 52 — so large, in fact, that there is a “travel team” because not everyone can fit on a standard full-size school bus.

On Saturday, there was room to spare, however, because some of Kent County’s athletes had commitments that conflicted with the schedule change and did not make the trip, according to head coach Lakesha Hoxter.

Medals were awarded to the top three place-finishers in each event; ribbons were given out to those who placed fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth.

Second in the triple jump, senior RJ Peterson had the best finish for Kent County’s boys.

Sophomore Joey Homyack also medaled for the Trojans with a third-place bronze in the 1600 meters.

Earning ribbons were Peterson, fourth in the 200 meters; Homyack, fifth in the 800 meters; and Ke’yare Hawkins, fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put.
