STEVENSVILLE — Janey Depp is at it again.
At the Kent Island Invitational on April 16, the KCHS junior lowered the school record in the 1600 meters for the third time in less than a month when she placed third in 5 minutes, 43.82 seconds.
Depp trailed only Snow Hill senior Allie Suarezapecheche [5:38.70] and Stephen Decatur junior Lily Norman [personal best of 5:42.67].
Before the 2026 season started, the Kent County High School record of 5:54.8 had stood for 28 years. Depp broke the record on March 28 at the Cambridge Classic, stopping the timer in 5:50.92, and broke it again on April 9 at the Trojans’ only home meet of the year when she ran 5:46.0.
This was the 16th edition of the Kent Island Invitational, which drew runners and jumpers and throwers from 16 Eastern Shore schools. Medals were awarded to the top three place-finishers in each event; ribbons were given out to those who placed fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth.
Host Kent Island’s girls and boys won their respective meets.
Kent County’s boys placed seventh; Kent County’s girls tied for 12th, but were only six points out of seventh place.
KCHS traveled with 23 athletes, and had no more than two entries per event.
Senior sprinter Rah ‘Zir Wilson was the Trojans’ only gold medalist, winning the 100 meters in 11.07 seconds. His nearest challenger was James Bennett junior Mehki Parker [11.20].
Depp won second-place silver in the 3200 meters, again following Suarezapecheche, and third-place bronze at half that distance.
Pacome Mennetrier, an international student who is attending KCHS for the 2025-26 academic year, won bronze in the 800 meters and anchored the bronze medal 4×800-meter relay that included Joey Homyack, Kiyan Hynson and Trent Johnson.
Ribbons were awarded to: Depp, fourth in the 800 meters; Wilson, fourth in the high jump; Homyack, fifth in the 800 meters; Hynson, eighth in the 300-meter hurdles; Ke’yare Hawkins, fifth in the shot put and sixth in the discus; Kamari Hoxter, sixth in the high jump; RJ Peterson, fourth in the 200 meters and fifth in the triple jump; and the 4×100-meter relay of Bennett Harris, Wilson, Hynson and Peterson, sixth.
