Depp, Wilson set their marks in KCHS record book

WORTON — Rah ‘Zir Wilson was the fastest guy at the outdoor track and field meet here April 9.

He also was the highest jumper.

And, the Kent County High School senior set another school record, bringing his total to three. [Last May, at the state-qualifying Class 1A East Region meet, Wilson established standards of 21 feet, 10.5 inches in the long jump and 43 feet, 10.5 inches in the triple jump.]

At the April 9 meet, on his home track, Wilson cleared 6 feet, 8 inches on his first try at that height. He bettered the previous KCHS record of 6-6 that Melvin Morton set in 1995 and Larry Steward equaled in 2024.

Wilson made one attempt at 6-9, but then stopped due to soreness in his knee.

He also won the 100 meters, an event that drew 28 sprinters from four schools.

Four Trojans placed in the top 10 in the 100, including senior RJ Peterson, who was three-tenths of a second behind Wilson and one-tenth of a second behind runner-up Ja’Zir Dickerson of Colonel Richardson.

Subsequently, Peterson won his signature event, the 200 meters.

Illness prevented KCHS from sending out its top 4×100-meter relay of Bennett Harris, Wilson, Peterson and Kiyan Hynson.

While it was Senior Day, with KCHS celebrating its 13 senior athletes and four senior managers, it was junior Janey Depp who stood out among the Kent County girls. She won the 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter open races, and lowered her own school record in the 1600 to 5 minutes, 46 seconds — more than a minute faster than her nearest challenger. Depp set the previous record of 5:50.92 at the Cambridge Classic invitational on March 28.

In the field events, senior Kamari Hoxter won the high jump and Ke’yare Hawkins placed second in the shot put and fourth in the discus.

Printed here are complete results for Kent County. Top 10 place-finishers are noted.

This was the Trojans’ only home meet of 2026. Also competing were track and field athletes from Colonel Richardson, North Caroline and North Dorchester high schools.
