Double-digit scoring from Harrison, Amato carries CCA to homecoming victory

CHESTERTOWN — Reagan Harrison and Sam Amato collectively scored nine first-quarter points Feb. 6 to give host Chestertown Christian Academy a lead that was never threatened, and they were just getting started.

Harrison and Amato combined for 10 more points in the second quarter to extend the spread to 29-14.

They each finished in double digits as CCA walloped Fairwinds Christian School, 57-28, in a girls basketball game between conference rivals.

This was the second game of a homecoming triple-header, with the Patriots winning all three games.

CCA’s varsity girls improved to 7-2 on the season and 5-1 in the North division of the Delaware Valley Christian Athletic Conference.

Harrison, a freshman, led all players with 20 points.

She scored 12 points in the third quarter. Her bucket from close range in the paint with 34 seconds remaining in the frame pushed the lead to 51-21.

Harrison took a seat on the bench 17 seconds later, and cheered from the sideline for the remainder of the game.

Amato, an eighth-grader, contributed 17 points through three quarters.

Five others also found the scoring column for the winners: senior Maddie Alton, junior Madi Slager and sixth grader Georgia Harrison with two points apiece; senior Megan Stoltzfus with six points; and eighth grader Kate Stoltzfus with eight.

CCA’s varsity-only program has a roster that runs the gamut of sixth graders to high school seniors.

Senior Gabby Johnson (19 points) and junior Natalie Hernandez (nine points) accounted for all the scoring for the visiting Knights of Bear, Delaware, who are still without a win.

Johnson knocked down a three on the way to seven points in the closely contested first frame, leaving Fairwinds to trail by a 17-11 count.

However, the game quickly got away from the Knights in the second quarter as they scored only three points — all from the free-throw line.

CCA opened the second half on a 22-7 run, including 14 points in a row punctuated by a Reagan Harrison layup with 2 minutes, 7 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Reagan Harrison gave the home team its first lead of 20-plus points, 39-18, when she came up with a steal at mid-court on the way to an easy layup with 4:38 to play in the third.

Amato added six points in the third quarter and Alton and Megan Stoltzfus each contributed two as the Patriots pulled ahead, 51-21.

CCA took its largest lead of the game at 57-23 when sixth grader Georgia Harrison swished a shot from the right side with five minutes and change remaining.

By that time the CCA coaches had cleared their bench.

Fairwinds ended the game on a 5-0 run over the final 4 minutes, 6 seconds against CCA reserves.
