Error-prone Trojans exit playoffs with opening-round loss

PERRYVILLE — Not enough hits and too many errors.

That’s the story in a nutshell for Kent County’s softball team, which was defeated in the opening round of the Class 1A East Region I tournament, 15-2, on May 9 at Perryville.

Kate Cannon and Anna Bitter accounted for the shorthanded Trojans’ only hits.

Kent County dressed 10 players, but that included one who was sidelined because of injury, according to coach Michelle Phillips.

She said the Trojans played “OK,” which is probably being generous since they committed multiple errors that led to eight unearned runs.

“The great thing is there is always room for improvement and the girls now understand my desire to work on defense,” Phillips told The Evening Enterprise in an email.

She added, “If we improve our defensive efforts, they will surely turn heads next year.”

Kent County (2-16) was the fifth seed in the five-team region, and ended the season on a seven-game losing streak.

Perryville (9-11) upset top seed Colonel Richardson in the region semifinals, 1-0, but lost in the championship game to Cecil County rival Bohemia Manor, 11-3.
