Fahrman caps MVP tennis season as region champ, state tournament qualifier

COLUMBIA — Junior Nina Fahrman wrapped up her MVP tennis season as the only Kent County High School player to pin down a berth in the state tournament.

She did not drop a set in claiming the Class 1A East Region I girls singles title on May 17, but was swept in the opening round of the Class 1A state tournament a week later at the Wilde Lake Tennis Club in Columbia.

Only the eight region champions qualified for states, and Fahrman had the unfortunate draw of eventual runner-up Laylah Webb of Friendly High School in the quarterfinals.

Winning in straight sets was the script that Webb followed; she defeated Fahrman, 6-2, 6-0, and then No. 2 seed Amy Wanex of Cambridge-South Dorchester, 6-4, 6-0, on May 24, to reach the championship match the following day.

Unbeaten and top-seeded Lauren Toms of Williamsport was crowned the winner after Webb retired with an injury. Toms led 3-0 in the first set when the match was called.

Toms was the state runner-up in 2022 and finished third last year.

She went 22-0 this season and 46-1 over the final two seasons.

Soccer is Toms’ sport of choice. She is headed to the Naval Academy in the fall where she has committed to play NCAA Division I soccer.

Meantime, Kent County’s Fahrman has another year of high school tennis.

She was the Trojans’ No. 1 player this spring and their most valuable player.

“Nina displayed remarkable composure and skill on the court, outplaying her opponents with her precise strokes and strategic play,” Kent County coach Chanelle Copper told The Evening Enterprise in a text message.

Copper said Fahrman’s “commitment to the sport has undoubtedly paid off with winning a well-deserved region title.”

Fahrman is a two-time region champ, winning last year in girls doubles with then-senior Maritza Lopez.

She has been playing tennis for only two years. As a freshman at KCHS, she played junior varsity softball.
