CHESTERTOWN — Florence Sutton went to be with her Lord on Nov. 2, 2024 at the Resorts at Chester River Manor.
Born Edith Florence Lucht on Jan. 11, 1934, to the late Ruth Starr Lucht and Rudolph Lucht, she was the fifth of seven children.
Florence graduated from Chestertown High School in 1951 and married Edward P. Sutton on Sept. 18, 1951. They were married for 62 years until his death in 2013.
Florence began work as a secretary to attorney Elroy Boyer before she was married and later started her own secretarial service and telephone answering service in her home, all while raising her six children.
A life-long resident of Kent County, she served as court reporter in Kent County Circuit Court and continued in that job for decades — even working one day a week in her 80s.
She was clerk for the Zoning Appeals Board of both Kent County and Queen Anne’s County.
She also served as supervisor to the Kent County Board of Elections for many years.
Florence was a charter member of the Chestertown Church of the Nazarene. Her Sunday dinners, following church each week, were a time of fellowship for her family and friends. Everyone was welcome in her home — no new visitor left church without an invitation to join.
She and her husband also hosted many exchange students from Kent County High School and The Gunston School over the years.
She loved her Lord, her family and friends. She loved cooking for a crowd. She loved crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles and playing Rook and Scrabble and watching old movies. She loved children and babies.
Florence is survived by daughters Vickie Kaylor (Michael), Melinda Graham (Michael), Brenda Horrocks and Elizabeth Ortiz (Randy); son Edward “Speedy” Sutton (Tammy); 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She is predeceased by her husband; her son-in-law Kenneth Horrocks; her daughter Cynthia Hamm; and son-in-law Geoffrey Hamm.
A celebration of Florence’s life will be held at the Chestertown Church of the Nazarene on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Church of the Nazarene, 6943 Church Hill Road, Chestertown, MD 21620.
