Forum for school board candidates is April 18

CHESTERTOWN — Candidates for the Kent County Board of Education will be featured in a “Meet the Candidates” forum sponsored by the Democratic Club of Kent County.

The forum is Thursday, April 18 at Minary’s Dream Alliance, 9155 American Legion Drive, Chestertown.

Two seats on the five-member Kent County school board are on this year’s ballot. The election is in November.

There are four candidates: Piers Heriz-Smith, Laura McKenzie, John Queen and incumbent Francoise Sullivan.

Joe Goetz, the current president, is not seeking re-election.

The school board race is nonpartisan.

At next week’s forum, which will be moderated by a member of the DCKC, each of the candidates will be allotted three minutes to make an opening statement; respond to prepared questions that they will have received in advance; and then be allotted three minutes to make a closing statement.

There also will be an opportunity for the candidates to respond to questions from the audience.

On April 18, doors will open at 6 p.m. Light refreshments will be available.

The forum will start at about 7 p.m. and will conclude by 8:30 p.m.

A brief business meeting will be conducted by the DCKC at 6:45 p.m.

Just prior to the start of the forum, the club will honor Superintendent Karen Couch, who is retiring at the end of June.
