Hawkins sets another KCHS track record in shot put

SNOW HILL — Kent County boasted a pair of winners in the first indoor track meet of the season last week, with sophomore Ke’yare Hawkins and junior Gavin Larrimore taking first in the shot put.

Hawkins topped 25 other entries with a throw of 31 feet, 2.5 inches to establish a school record.

The previous record of 27-1 was set by Jillian Rose in 1996.

In May at the Class 1A state championships for outdoor track and field, where she placed seventh, then-freshman Hawkins improved her own school record to 33-9.

At last week’s indoor meet, Larrimore led a field of 29 boys with his throw of 39 feet, 9 inches.

Coach Kalyn Stout said Larrimore has been hitting 42 feet in practice, and she is optimistic that he will surpass the school record of 44-9.5 before the season is out.

The first Bayside Conference meet of 2023-24 was Dec. 6 at the Worcester County Recreation Center. Kent County did not take its full team, traveling with only 29 because of limits on the number of athletes from any one school that can enter each event.

Stout described it as a “phenomenal” showing by the Trojans.

She told The Evening Enterprise in an email, “The team pushed themselves and each other to new personal bests which set us up phenomenally already in the regional rankings. … Last year was a building year for the Indoor Track team so we decided our focus for this season is our road to regionals.”

Stout added, “The kids are all dedicated and are pushing to try to bring home a championship this year. … The drive and dedication I am seeing from these young athletes is inspiring and I am so blessed to be a part of this team.”

There were a total of 16 Eastern Shore public high schools, of all classifications, at the Dec. 6 meet Most of the events had at least 15 entries, and some had as many as 30 and 40-plus.
