Health department closes Betterton beach due to sewage spill

BETTERTON — The Kent County Health Department on Wednesday, July 17 closed the beach here due to a sewage spill, according to a notice on the agency’s website. The KCHD is advising against swimming, water skiing and other direct water contact activities including fishing.

The health department was notified at about 10 a.m. by Betterton officials that there had been a spill of about 2,000 gallons of sewage.

Efforts are underway to contain the spill.

Meantime, Erika Hercher, the county’s director of environmental health, has taken water samples to a lab in Salisbury for testing. Results are expected Thursday morning.

According to the post on the KCHD website, the closure will remain in effect until “the acceptable standard is met for the designated bathing beach.”
