Honoring heroes

ROCK HALL — Ahead of the national observance of Memorial Day, members of Sgt. Preston Ashley American Legion Post 228 on Saturday morning, May 23 continued their tradition of placing American flags at the gravesites of veterans in cemeteries in the Rock Hall area.

Pictured here is Larry Crouch at the gravesite of his brother, Norman Lyn Vansant, in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Vansant served in the U.S. Navy stateside from 1958 to 1962, when he was honorably discharged.

Saturday’s weather was rainy and unseasonably cool.

Members of Post 228 annually place American flags at hundreds of graves in 10 cemeteries, which include Old St. Paul’s Church Cemetery in Sandy Bottom and private family plots in Piney Neck and Eastern Neck.

The count this year was close to 1,000 flags, according to Crouch, a life member of Post 228 and a former county commander of the American Legion in Kent.
