CHESTERTOWN — Sonia “Sonny” Huntzinger has been appointed executive director of Main Street Chestertown, the organization announced in a news release Monday, Nov. 4.
Her first day on the job was Nov. 1.
Huntzinger succeeds Nina Fleegle, who had held the position since July 2021.
Fleegle stepped down at the end of August to take another job.
According to the news release, Huntzinger has more than two decades of experience in economic development, tourism marketing and nonprofit leadership, bringing “a wealth of expertise and a passion for revitalizing communities and local economies.”
She most recently served as economic development administrator for Chester County, Pennsylvania, where she successfully launched initiatives to stimulate business growth, attract investment and revitalize downtown Coatesville.
Prior to that, she was the executive director of Downtown Inc. in York, Pennsylvania, where she “transformed the organization into a dynamic economic development agency, tripling the operational budget and significantly expanding volunteer engagement,” according to the news release.
Huntzinger holds a Bachelor of Science in business from Muhlenberg College and an Associate of Arts from Monmouth University.
In a written statement, Main Street Chestertown board President Kristen Owen said: “We are excited to welcome Sonny to Chestertown. Her impressive track record in economic development and commitment to sustainable growth aligns perfectly with our vision for the future of Chestertown. We are confident she will bring invaluable insights and innovative solutions to continue enhancing our vibrant downtown.”
A credentialed economic development professional certified by the International Economic Development Council, Huntzinger has extensive experience in public-private partnerships, small business development and destination branding.
Her career highlights include raising more than $3 million in private contributions and public grants, growing nonprofit staff capacities and leading successful business attraction programs.
As executive director, Huntzinger is tasked with leading efforts to enhance Chestertown’s business district, foster community engagement and promote the area as a premier destination for visitors and residents alike.
“I am honored to join Main Street Chestertown,” Huntzinger said in the news release. “This community has such a rich history and vibrant spirit. I’m especially excited to dive into Phase 2 of the Downtown Master Plan — a pivotal stage where we can begin bringing our vision to life with actionable projects and strategies. This is a wonderful opportunity to work together on a sustainable future for Chestertown.”
