Interviews for KCPS superintendent to begin April 26-27

ROCK HALL — The process to select a new superintendent of Kent County Public Schools has begun in earnest.

The five elected Kent County school board members along with consultants contracted through the Maryland Association of Boards of Education met on Monday, April 15 to review all applications, board President Joe Goetz confirmed.

The application deadline was April 8.

The Kent County Board of Education is tasked with hiring a schools chief to succeed Karen Couch, Ed.D., who is retiring in June.

During the BOE’s regularly scheduled meeting on April 8, Goetz said that the first round of interviews would be held April 26-27, with a second round being held in early May.

The review of applications on April 15 and first round of interviews fall under the heading of administrative function sessions, according to the “Notification of Next Meeting” item on the April 8 school board meeting agenda.

Goetz has directed all inquiries about the search to the KCPS website, https://www.kent.k12.md.us/SuperintendentSearch.aspx.

According to the website, a Maryland superintendent certification is required and a doctorate in education or a related field is preferred. General criteria include knowledge of Maryland education system, laws, funding, curriculum, assessment and the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future.

Also listed is a starting salary of $185,000 with a “competitive benefits package.”

Couch announced at the regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting on Jan. 8 that she would retire at the end of June, one year before the completion of a third contracted full term.

She came to Kent County Public Schools in July 2013 as a former superintendent of the year for the state of New Mexico. She was one of 19 applicants for the job.

The Public School Superintendents’ Association of Maryland selected Couch as the 2021 Maryland Superintendent of the Year.

Trish McGee, owner and publisher of The Evening Enterprise, is an elected member of the Kent County Board of Education.
