CHESTERTOWN — On this day of Thanksgiving, The Evening Enterprise expresses its gratitude to the countless individuals and organizations that lift up our community.
Those who lend a helping hand include members of historic Janes United Methodist Church at the corner of Cross and Cannon streets in downtown Chestertown, who held their second biennial coat giveaway on Nov. 20. Hats, gloves, scarves and socks were given away, in addition to 76 coats — some brand new, others gently used, and all donated.
This ministry outreach by Janes Church is sponsored by cousins Lorrie Johnson, Altamese Davidson and Antoinette Butcher. They are granddaughters of the late Charles and Bertha Smith, who were longtime congregants of the church that dates its origins to the 1830s.
The first winter weather clothing giveaway was in 2023, and the plan is to continue every other year.
“This is our way of giving back to the community, helping those in need and carrying on the Smith name. Blessing others,” Lorrie Johnson told The Evening Enterprise.
