CAMBRIDGE — While freshman Quinten Joiner was battling for a spot atop the leader board, his Kent County High School teammates were quietly putting together their best composite score of the season Monday, Sept. 30 at the Hyatt River Marsh Golf Club in Cambridge.
Joiner fired a 1-over-par 37 and sophomore Tucker Ervin carded a career-best 54 for KCHS, which placed fifth among eight North Bayside Conference schools.
This is the all-underclassman Trojans’ best place-finish of the season.
Also contributing to the team scoring were Braden Wilson (50) and Drew Haas (62).
Barrett Gruszyinski also shot a 62, but only four scores are counted.
“Things are going great. Barrett and Drew are becoming more consistent, which definitely helps our scores, and everyone is improving one match to the next,” Kent County head coach Jonathan Fitch told The Evening Enterprise in an email.
Fitch said Joiner is starting to take on a leadership role and helping his teammates, who are now asking him for tips during practice and as they are preparing for each match.
Another key is the knowledge and vast experience that assistant coach Kolyn Kirby brings to the team.
In the only match of the week, Queen Anne’s Nate Smith and St. Michaels’ Lexi Rockwell shot a 1-under-par 35 to share medalist honors.
Joiner, Kent Island’s Josh David and North Caroline’s Taryn Brandt tied for third with 37s.
In team scoring, the duo of Smith and Sam Yetman (38) led Queen Anne’s to the best team score of 162.
Kent Island (178) was second, followed by St. Michaels (181), North Caroline (196) and Kent County (203).
Easton (206) edged North Dorchester (209) for sixth, and Colonel Richardson (249) completed the team scoring.
Cambridge-South Dorchester did not have enough golfers to score as a team.
NOTES: Kent County will host its only match of the season Monday, Oct. 7 at Chester River Yacht & Country Club, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
At the Sept. 24 match on the back nine at Hog Neck Golf Course in Easton, Kent County’s Quinten Joiner was the medalist with a 38 — two strokes better than runner-up Josh David.
