Martinez 4th in state 50, 100 freestyle; Joiner also sets school record

COLLEGE PARK — Kent County High School’s Mary Jane Joiner and Henry Martinez were at their very best at their very last swim meet of the 2023-24 interscholastic season, lowering their own school records at the Class 1A-2A-3A state championships Feb. 24 at the University of Maryland.

Joiner, a sophomore, improved the school record in the 200-yard freestyle to 2 minutes, 6.74 seconds, placing ninth.

She set the previous record of 2:07.61 four days earlier at the state-qualifying East Region meet that was held at St. Mary’s College.

Martinez, the Trojans’ three-time team MVP, re-established school records in the sprint freestyle events — 22.32 in the 50 and 49.71 in the 100. He placed fourth in both events.

Martinez set the previous records of 22.38 and 49.81 last season.

Also noteworthy was the 200 free relay of Aaron Saunders, Tucker Ervin, Ben Loller and Martinez, who swam a season best of 1:40.55 — 4 seconds faster than their previous best, also just four days earlier at the region meet.

Kent County High School sent a modest-sized team of qualifiers to the state championships –Martinez, Joiner, Aaron Saunders and Izzy Anderson in individual events and two boys relays.

The top three place-finishers in every event in each of the four regions automatically qualified for states.

Also, individuals and relays who in their region meet final had the top 12 times statewide — excluding automatic qualifiers — also advanced to fill out the field of 24 competitors for each event.

At states, Joiner and Martinez were the only top-10 performers for KCHS, though Anderson (1:06.54) was just a half-second out of 10th in the 100 backstroke behind Havre de Grace’s Casssidy Howes (1:06.01).
