CHESTERTOWN — Chesapeake Bank and Trust has announced the election of Eastern Shore native Karen Biggs to its board of directors.
She has decades of experience in business leadership, finance and community involvement.
Biggs, who earned a Bachelor of Science in business finance from the University of Delaware, began her professional career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
During her tenure with the Farmers Home Administration and later the Rural Development Administration, she was responsible for processing and servicing home, farm, business and community loans.
In 1992, Biggs and her husband, Curtis, founded Biggs Fuel Company Inc. in Galena.
Over the past 34 years, the company has grown into a trusted regional supplier of gasoline, diesel fuel and heating oil, serving farms, marinas, contractors, businesses and homeowners throughout Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
“We are delighted to welcome Karen to our board of directors,” bank President and CEO Robert Altieri said in a June 23 news release.
Altieri said Biggs’ “extensive business experience, commitment to our local communities and strong understanding of the needs of Eastern Shore businesses and families will be invaluable as we continue to serve our customers and support the growth of our region.”
Biggs, who now lives in Chestertown, spent her early years on a farm in Galena and grew up along the Sassafras River, where she developed a lifelong appreciation for the Eastern Shore’s waterways and communities.
Her personal and professional experiences have given her a unique perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing local businesses and residents.
In a statement, Biggs said, “I am pleased to join the board of Chesapeake Bank and Trust, the only locally headquartered bank in Kent County. The professionalism of the bank’s team and its commitment to serving customers and our community are values I greatly respect and look forward to supporting.”
Chesapeake Bank and Trust, a locally owned and managed community bank headquartered in Chestertown, provides personalized banking products and services to businesses and individuals throughout Kent and Queen Anne’s counties.
