KCHS’ Fennell to compete in New Balance Nationals indoor track meet

WORTON — As an encore to his fifth-place finish in the Class 1A state championships Feb. 20, Kent County High School junior sprinter Tyrell Fennell is headed to the New Balance Nationals indoor track and field meet this week in Boston, Massachusetts.

Fennell has qualified in the championship division after meeting the standard of 6.62 in the 55 meters; he did so with a personal best of 6.58 in the Class 1A East Region meet Feb. 9 at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover.

KCHS coach Kalyn Stout said Fennell “has been working hard and we are excited to support him and watch him run on a huge stage.”

The Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center will host prelims, semifinals and some finals Thursday to Saturday, March 7-9, and the TRACK at New Balance will host only finals on Sunday, March 10.

The New Balance Nationals — what has been branded as “the Fastest Party on the Planet” — is an invitational-style meet that is sanctioned by USA Track & Field (USATF). It is not sanctioned by any high school federation since it is contested after the official high school season.

Last June, KCHS high jumper Larry Steward and sprinter Rah Zir Wilson competed in the New Balance Nationals outdoor track and field meet at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
