KCHS’ Ford, Bellarin are No. 1 seeds in state-qualifying region wrestling tournament

CENTREVILLE — Senior Scottie Ford, who last weekend won a third straight Bayside Conference title, is leading a small but stellar Kent County High School contingent to the Class 1A/2A East Region wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday at nearby Queen Anne’s County High School.

In addition to Ford, who is unbeaten at 165 pounds, Kent County has qualified seniors Tye Bellarin (132 pounds) and Noah Iacona (144 pounds) and freshman Jake Stumpf (138 pounds) in the coed tournament, as well as Karoly Quevedo (100 pounds), Autumn Smolens (115 pounds) and Taylor Franklin (130 pounds) in the girls tournament.

As the Bayside Conference champion, Ford (29-0) was guaranteed a berth in the region tournament.

The top four place-finishers at Baysides automatically qualified, which is how Bellarin and Iacona, who were second in their respective weight class, punched their tickets.

Stumpf accumulated enough points during the season to qualify, and will have to win his pigtail match Friday in order to stay in the tournament.

Smolens was Kent County’s only entry in the Bayside Conference’s girls tournament.

Quevedo and Franklin “were nursing some end-of-season injuries we were trying to get them through before regionals,” KCHS coach Chris Yiannakis told The Evening Enterprise.

The region tournament is the qualifier for the state tourney; the top four place-finishers in each weight class move on to the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, March 5-7.

Ford and Bellarin are seeded No. 1 in their respective weight class and Iacona is the No. 3 seed in his weight class.

In the girls tournament, the top three place-finishers in each of eight regions [1A/2A East, West, North and South and 3A/4A East, West, North and South] will advance to a single classification 24-line bracket at the state tournament.

Quevedo is the No. 3 seed in her weight class.

A full write-up of the Bayside Conference tournament will appear in tomorrow’s edition of The Evening Enterprise.
