KCHS improves to 5-0 all-time in girls soccer against Crisfield

WORTON — Trojan Stadium has been user friendly for Kent County High School’s girls soccer team, which is 2-1 this year at home.

Most recently, on Sept. 21, host KCHS defeated Crisfield, 7-0.

The Trojans are 5-0 in this series that started in 2022; all five wins are by shutout.

In the latest edition of this rivalry, freshman Emily Morrone scored twice for KCHS.

Emma Christophel, Ayla Wilson [penalty kick] and Abby Merrill — all freshmen — also contributed to the goal count.

Coach Ben Joiner attempted to keep the match from getting completely out of hand, mindful that the Crabbers had made the more than two-hour trip from Crisfield to Worton.

Among other strategies, Joiner moved players out of their usual positions. For example, goalie Lyric Frase logged minutes as a field player and Morrone played the entire second half as the net-minder.

Overall, Joiner said he is “super proud” with the effort and improvement of the Trojans [2-4].

“We’ve had some really good things happen,” Joiner told The Evening Enterprise. “We’re maintaining [ball] possession much longer, which allows us to threaten to score. And when we get opportunities to score, we have kids who can put it in the cage.”

Both of Kent County’s wins to date are against programs that are similarly challenged by small rosters and have players who have limited experience at the high school level.

“When we play a team that we match up well with, we’re able to implement what we’ve practiced,” Joiner said.

Kent County is home today [Thursday, Oct. 1] at 4 p.m. against Cambridge-South Dorchester. This is a rematch of the season opener.

The Trojans travel tomorrow to Mardela.
