WORTON — Kent County High School’s FFA members are headed to Indiana next month for the youth agriculture program’s national convention.
The 97th annual National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis (Oct. 23-26) features agricultural science fair demonstrations, competitions, workshops, award ceremonies and more.
The convention program, as presented earlier this month to the Kent County Board of Education, provides a wealth of networking opportunities for students.
“We’re just super excited,” Taylor Allgeier, Kent County High School’s FFA president, told the Board of Education at its Sept. 9 meeting.
The FFA students will board a bus at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills on Oct. 21 and arrive in Indianapolis the following day.
The students and their chaperones will be staying in a hotel just a few blocks from the convention.
Kent County High School FFA Treasurer Emily Hocking said plans are in the works for fundraisers to help offset the travel costs.
“We’re looking to raise money to pay for the costs of our seats on the bus,” Hocking said.
David Daniels, sentinel of the high school’s FFA chapter, spoke about the various activities and programs at the conference.
There will be competitions in areas such as public speaking.
There will be an expo offering students an opportunity to learn more about various ag-industry companies.
Additionally, there will be a college fair, at which students can learn about higher education programs concentrating on agriculture.
In all, the annual conference provides FFA members various avenues to explore agriculture pathways and network with industry leaders and fellow students from far and wide.
“It is a very big event that should have very big opportunities for every student,” Daniels said.
