Kent County’s 18-point fourth quarter sinks host North East

NORTH EAST — Kent County closed out the game on an 18-4 run, sparked by junior Zoe Angel’s 11 fourth-quarter points, to upset host North East, 51-39, in high school girls basketball Feb. 7.

It was a signature win for the almost all-underclassman squad — co-captain BreAsia Jackson is the only senior on Class 1A Kent County’s nine-player roster — that defeated a larger Class 2A opponent for the first time this season.

Plus, the Trojans picked up their fifth win to match their 2022-23 win total, which was one of coach Tyray Johnson’s goals for this season.

Through the first 24 minutes it was back-and-forth for what was mostly a one- or two-possession game, with Kent County trailing after the opening frame, 12-8; pulling ahead at halftime, 24-21; and falling behind by a field goal after three quarters, 35-33.

The Trojans’ half-court pressure defense produced multiple scoring chances off of turnovers.

In the second half, and especially in the fourth quarter, they played a more complete game on both ends of the court, according to coach Johnson.

He told The Evening Enterprise in a text message, “In the second half we played much better offense with good passes and ball movement, which helped get us some creative shots.”

Angel and freshman point guard Talicia Wright “really stepped up their games in the second half, which also kinda helped us take the lead in the fourth to win the game,” Johnson said in the text message.

The trio of Angel, Wright and co-captain Kate Cannon collectively scored the Trojans’ 18 fourth-quarter points.

Angel finished with a game high of 20 points, with 15 points coming in the second half and 11 of those in the huge fourth quarter.

Wright totaled 18 points and Cannon put up seven.

Jackson and freshman Jane Cleary made up the balance, each with three points.

The Trojans (5-12) have only one home game remaining in the regular season — Tuesday, Feb. 13 against the Class 2A Kent Island Buccaneers (15-2), who are unbeaten on the road. Tip-off is at 4 p.m.
