Kent County’s Hawkins, Peterson, Wilson medal in Bayside track and field

CAMBRIDGE — Kent County High School junior Ke’yare Hawkins established a school record of 108 feet, 10 inches in the discus last week at the Bayside Conference track and field championships held at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School.

Hawkins crushed the previous record of 101-4 that she set last April at the Battle for [Route] 213 meet held at Queen Anne’s County High School.

At the Bayside Conference championships, drawing all 17 Eastern Shore public high schools that have track and field, Hawkins placed third among 37 competitors. She was the only Kent County girl to medal in any event.

Hawkins trailed only Parkside senior Alana King (120-11) and James M. Bennett junior Jecolia Traore (115-11).

Parkside and Bennett are Class 2A schools.

KCHS is a small Class 1A school.

Also for KCHS, juniors Ramon “RJ” Peterson (20 feet, 9.5 inches) and Rah ‘Zir Wilson (20-8) placed second and third, respectively, in the long jump.

Cambridge’s Antonio Bluebird (21-1) was the only one of the 34 competitors to clear 21 feet.

Wilson placed third in the 100 meters in a personal best of 11.06.

Peterson placed third in the 200 in 22.24 — less than three-tenths of a second off the school record that was set in 2007 and that he equaled last month.

Peterson also flirted with the school record in the triple jump, taking third with a distance of 43 feet, 2.75 inches. The standard of 43-5 was established in 1983.

Also worth pointing out are personal bests realized by Kiyan Hynson in the 400 meters; Cody Cummings and Jayden Larrier Thomas in the 110-meter hurdles; Avon Hubbard and TaeShaun Demby in the shot put; and Cummings in the discus.

KCHS did not travel with a full complement of runners and jumpers because of scheduling conflicts, which included exams and the Career and Technical Education showcase and awards ceremony at the high school.
