Kent girls hope to rebound in East Region tournament

FEDERALSBURG — The well-rested Trojans are headed to Colonel Richardson High School on Friday, March 1 for a semifinal game in the Class 1A East Region I girls basketball tournament. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.

It’s been two weeks since Kent County’s girls dropped their regular-season finale at North Dorchester, 56-49. Coach Tyray Johnson said the loss has served to inspire rather than dishearten the Trojans.

“We’re ready,” Johnson said Wednesday (Feb. 28) in an impromptu interview during practice.

“We learned a few things in that loss,” he said. “We’ve got to stay out of foul trouble and do a better job on the putbacks.”

The loss at North Dorchester (3-16) on Feb. 15 was unexpected, Johnson and some of his players acknowledged. That’s because the Trojans won easily, 38-18, when the teams played at KCHS in mid-January.

In the rematch, it was as if the Trojans (5-14) never got off the bus. They trailed 11-3 after the opening quarter, and played a futile game of catch-up.

“We started to pick it up in the second quarter,” Johnson said, when Kent County closed out the half on a 17-12 run, but foul trouble in the second half derailed the comeback.

Ultimately, four starters — Zoe Angel (23 points), Kate Cannon (eight points), Jane Cleary and BreAsia Jackson — fouled out, and KCHS finished the game with only four players on the court.

The only starter who did not foul out was freshman point guard Talicia Wright, who finished with 15 points.

NOTES: Colonel Richardson (10-10) swept Kent County in the regular season’s home-and-away series, 47-30 and 49-38.

St. Michaels (1-18) travels to top seed Perryville (10-9) for Friday’s other East Region I semifinal.

Bohemia Manor (5-15) withdrew from the tournament, so the four remaining schools all received first-round byes.

The championship game is Wednesday, March 6 at the highest remaining seed.
