TOLCHESTER — The pickle-eating contest at the Kent County Fair on Friday night, July 19 very quickly became a good-natured battle between 4-H’ers Will Spencer and Dorsey Owings as the two 11-year-olds separated themselves from the rest of the pack, each of them chomping and swallowing through a cup of eight pickle spears.
Ultimately, Dorsey emerged the winner — thrusting his empty cup into the air after one final gulp, as Will graciously patted him on the back.
For his efforts, Dorsey was awarded a Christmas tree ornament shaped like a pickle.
This was a first-time event at the Kent County Fair, and followed immediately after the greased pig contest.
In the adult competition, Jonathan Fitch was the hands-down winner.
