Legacy Day honorees include local Black authors

CHESTERTOWN — After celebrating the legacy of Legacy Day in 2023, the annual acknowledgement of the rich cultural heritage of Kent County’s African American community kicked off its second decade this year with a brand-new offering — a salute to local Black authors.

The event was held Sunday afternoon, Aug. 18 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, punctuating the tremendously successful 11th edition of Legacy Day.

The Bookplate, an independent bookstore in downtown Chestertown, partnered with the Legacy Day Committee to celebrate 15 authors. The focus was on the work and achievements of local African Americans.

A free champagne brunch, prepared by Emmanuel Church parishioners, preceded the program, which included some of the authors reading their poetry and prose, and talking about their personal journeys.

The authors, listed alphabetically, were James “Mel” Brooks, Terwana Brown and her mother Rose L. Greene, Yvette Hynson, L. Michelle Johnson, Ruby Moore Johnson, Regina Jones, Stephanie Lindsay, Lucy Maddox, Lisa Moody (also known as Aliyzah Graceson), John Munson, Robert Earl Price, George Shivers, Jeanette Sherbondy and Latonya Tilghman.

Their books can be purchased at The Bookplate, which is located at 112 S. Cross St.
