Marching band forming to celebrate Tea Party anniversary

CHESTERTOWN — “It’s March, so it must be marching band time.”

That’s what longtime drum major Mark Mumford of Chestertown would say — no matter what group of musicians and baton twirlers and flag corps and other performers he was gathering to start the season.

Mumford is at it again, organizing the Delmarva United Marching Band, what he in jest is calling “the dumb band” because of the acronym DUMB.

“We’re just a bunch of marching dummies,” Mumford said in a news release. “Give us a parade and we’ll be there.”

It’s about having some fun, he said.

The plan is to put together a marching band to recognize the 250th anniversary of the Chestertown Tea Party in 2024.

They will perform only two familiar standards: “The Washington Post March” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

Mumford said this will be a “one and done band event, unless you all decide otherwise.”

The first get-together is 6 p.m. Sunday, March 3 in the Emmanuel Church parish hall, corner of Cross Street and Monument Plaza across from Fountain Park.

The plan is to have at least one additional rehearsal in April, and another in May if needed.
